I really disagree with the way premesis on which y'all discuss blame for the shutdown. Saying "democrats shut the government down" by not voting for the budget bill implies that, by default, they would vote for whatever budget bill the Republicans made, and have now made a decision to not do that. That should not be the assumption. And, this is also the case when Republicans have been in the minority.
I'm sure most people aren't thinking about it this much, as you said, but that doesn't mean it have to like it.
Democrats always get blasted when they're not the "adults in the room", it's nothing new that they're still being penalized for occasionally choosing not to play handmaid's to the GOP.
Who shut down the government isn't a subject for speculation. We know who voted no and we know who voted yes. If you voted "no" then you are responsible for the shutdown. It really is that simple. If you want a say in policy then win elections. This gives the look of "sore losers" and, outside of the left echo chamber, people are going to see this for what it is and punish Democrats even more in the midterms.
I would also remind everyone that Trump has long wantd to get rid of a bunch of career federal workers and this has played right into his hands because Democrats have now given him a legitimate reason to do so.
Democrats seem unwilling or unable to face the truth and learn some heard lessons here. I certainly am no fan of Donald Trump's personality and even some of his policies give me pause BUT when the other side seems totally out of touch with reality, you leave the center with no other options. Trump was never the ideal choice but he was always the better of two bad options and this is the essential point that people on the left keep missing.
Most Americans are NOT blaming Republicans for the shutdown. The "data" is biased and tailored to make Democrats feel better about their bad choices. It's biased because most people on the right will not respond to polling from left leaning organizations and many won't respond to polling at all. If you want accurate data on how American's feel about Democrats then look at their unfavorability rating and the results of the elections.
