New York State Rep. Zohran Mamdani seriously outperformed expectations in the New York City Democratic mayoral primary on Tuesday, well positioning himself to win the general election this fall.
The election had become a two-way race between Mamdani and former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, with polls projecting the results would likely be close enough that a winner wouldn’t be known until ranked-choice ballots were fully tallied a week later. Instead, Cuomo conceded on Tuesday night and Mamdani has become a national figure within the Democratic Party practically overnight.
Nate Silver and Michael Lange, an elections analyst who covers New York City politics, joined me in a Substack Live chat to discuss how Mamdani won, where the polls went wrong and whether it says anything about the Democratic Party and national politics more broadly.
